A message promises a refund? Take a moment
Three habits to protect your information before tapping a link.
Recognize pressure
Be cautious of unexpected messages promising money while demanding personal details, bank information or urgent payment. A familiar logo does not prove who sent a message.
Verify independently
Do not open suspicious links or attachments. Type IRS.gov directly into your browser to find official information and ways to contact the IRS.
Help someone else
Share this guide with your family. For suspicious messages, follow the IRS reporting instructions; never share your private information in public comments.
