What changed and who it helps

On September 25, 2026, the IRS announced that IRS2Go is becoming the IRS app. This update is useful for individuals who want to check federal tax information on their phones. Published October 11, 2026, this article explains that announcement; it does not change filing deadlines or tax rules for any particular tax year.

More information in one place

The app adds access to selected Individual Online Account services. These include viewing available balance information, reviewing payments, reading certain notices and accessing tax records. You can also check refund and amended-return status. An available feature does not mean every document or tax issue can be handled in the app.

How to find the right app

Start at IRS.gov and use the official download links. The app is free and available for Apple and Android devices. If you already have IRS2Go, the IRS says you do not need a separate app: it updates automatically if that option is enabled, or you can update it through your app store. Avoid accessing your account through ads or unexpected links.

A helpful habit before asking for help

Write down what you need to review before opening the app: a payment, a letter or your return status. If you find a notice, read its instructions and keep a copy somewhere secure. Do not share passwords, access codes or screenshots containing sensitive information on social media. When speaking with a professional, use an agreed private channel and share only what is necessary.

What it does not replace

The app does not replace IRS.gov or telephone and in-person assistance. Its initial scope covers selected services for individuals; it should not be confused with a state tax portal.
